## How this works

India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifies products listed in quality control orders. Most electronics and IT products fall under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS): test at a recognised lab, register, and mark the product with an R-number. Many other products — cables, appliances, steel, pressure vessels — need an ISI mark licence, which adds a factory inspection and ongoing surveillance.

Foreign manufacturers need an Authorised Indian Representative for CRS. Radio products usually also need WPC Equipment Type Approval, and electronics carry e-waste (EPR) obligations.

## Questions

### What's the difference between BIS CRS and the ISI mark?

CRS is a registration based on a lab test report, with no factory audit. The ISI mark is a licence that requires a factory inspection, an in-house quality system and ongoing surveillance.

### Do foreign manufacturers need an Indian representative?

Yes, for CRS a manufacturer outside India must appoint an Authorised Indian Representative.
