# FCC Certification or SDoC? Find your route

Four questions about your device and you'll know which FCC equipment authorization route applies, and why.

Does the device intentionally transmit radio (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, LoRa, RFID, a remote control…)?

YesNo

Does it contain digital circuitry with clocks above 9 kHz (a microcontroller, processor, digital logic)?

## How this works

The FCC has two main equipment authorization procedures. Certification is for equipment with higher interference potential — including almost every intentional transmitter — and runs through a Telecommunication Certification Body. The Supplier's Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) is a self-declaration for lower-risk equipment such as digital devices that only emit unintentionally.

Many products need both: a Wi-Fi product has a transmitter (Certification) and digital circuitry (SDoC, or folded into the Certification). Building on a pre-certified module avoids the transmitter certification, as long as you stay inside the module's grant conditions.

## Questions

### Does a Bluetooth product always need FCC Certification?

Its transmitter does, unless you use a pre-certified module within its grant conditions. The rest of the product's digital circuitry is then authorised by SDoC.

### What's the difference between Class A and Class B?

Class B covers devices marketed for residential use or to the general public and has stricter emission limits. Class A is for devices marketed only for commercial, industrial or business use.

### Who can sign an SDoC?

The responsible party, which must be located in the United States. It keeps the test records and the compliance information.
