Select the correct part based on your product type. Consult the BIS compulsory registration list to confirm which part applies. 02 ### Obtain product test reports from BIS-recognized laboratory All key parameters (lumen, power factor, THD, CRI, CCT, safety) must be tested per IS 16102. Many BIS-recognized labs in India offer IS 16102 testing. For overseas manufacturers, ILAC-accredited labs may be accepted. 03 ### Prepare technical documentation Compile factory details, product specifications, label artwork, quality control procedures, and required compliance declarations. 04 ### Submit CRS application through BIS portal The manufacturer (or AIR for foreign companies) submits the application online, uploads all documents and test reports, and pays the BIS fee. 05 ### Obtain R-Number and apply Standard Mark on products After BIS grant, apply the Standard Mark with R-Number on each lamp or luminaire as per IS 16102 labeling requirements. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is BIS CRS mandatory for all LED products sold in India? Yes — LED lamps and LED luminaires are covered under the Energy Efficient Products Quality Control Order and BIS has issued CRS notifications for IS 16102 product categories. Selling LED products without CRS registration in India is non-compliant and penalties under the BIS Act 2016 apply. E-commerce platforms are required to verify BIS registration before listing LED products. ### What is the relationship between BIS CRS and BEE star rating for LED lamps? BIS CRS and BEE star rating are separate requirements. BIS CRS (Standard Mark) is a mandatory quality and safety certification. BEE star rating is an energy efficiency label showing energy consumption on a 1–5 star scale — BEE star labeling for LED lamps is also compulsory under the Energy Conservation Act. Both certifications are required: BIS Standard Mark for quality compliance, and BEE star label for energy efficiency disclosure. The test parameters for both overlap but are assessed by different regulators. ### Can I apply for BIS CRS before my LED product is finalized? No. BIS CRS registration is for a specific product model with defined specifications. The test reports must be for the final production specification. If the product is modified after registration (different chip, driver, or wattage), the registration may no longer cover the modified product and a fresh or amended application may be needed. Design freeze before initiating BIS testing is important. ### Does IS 16102 apply to LED emergency lighting? LED emergency luminaires are covered under a separate standard — IS 15885 Part 2/Sec 22 (for emergency lighting luminaires). IS 16102 covers general LED luminaires.
