# BIS CRS Certification for Electronics and IT Goods

BIS CRS registration is mandatory for electronics and IT goods sold in India. The process is straightforward compared to ISI Mark certification — no factory audit required — but the documentation must be precise and test reports must come from recognized laboratories.

## CRS application process step-by-step

01

### Determine applicable Indian Standard

Identify the correct IS standard for your product category. Each CRS product has a specific IS number (e.g., IS 13252 for IT equipment). Use the official BIS compulsorily registrable goods list to confirm.

02

### Get product tested at BIS-recognized lab

Submit samples to a BIS-recognized testing laboratory. The lab issues test reports as per the applicable IS. For foreign manufacturers, ILAC-accredited labs abroad are often acceptable.

03

### Appoint Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)

Foreign manufacturers must appoint an AIR with a permanent address in India. The AIR submits the application and handles all BIS correspondence. Indian manufacturers can apply directly.

04

### Submit online application through BIS portal

Register on the BIS CRS portal, complete the application form, upload test reports, factory details, and self-attested documents. Pay the application fee online.

05

### BIS verification and registration

BIS verifies documents and test reports. If satisfactory, they issue a CRS registration number. The manufacturer can then legally apply the Standard Mark with the R-Number to products.

## Required documents for CRS registration

01Test report from BIS-recognized laboratory (within 90 days)

02Factory registration certificate or incorporation documents

03Manufacturing flowchart with quality control points

04List of manufacturing machinery and testing equipment

05Quality control personnel details and qualifications

06Authorized Indian Representative appointment letter (for foreign manufacturers)

07Self-attested conformity declaration

08Product label artwork showing Standard Mark placement

## Common compliance pitfalls to avoid

Using test reports older than 90 days — BIS requires recent testing

Incorrect IS standard reference — each product category has specific standards

Missing AIR appointment for foreign manufacturers — applications get rejected

Inadequate label artwork — the Standard Mark must include the R-Number

Product specification mismatches — test reports must match actual production specifications

Failure to renew registration — CRS registration expires after 2 years

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does BIS CRS registration take?

After submitting a complete application with valid test reports, BIS typically processes CRS registration within 15-30 working days. Delays usually happen due to incomplete documentation or queries about test report validity. Foreign manufacturer applications may take slightly longer for AIR verification.

### What is the validity period of CRS registration?

CRS registration is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Renewal applications must be submitted at least 3 months before expiry. If you miss the renewal window, you must submit a fresh application with new test reports.

### Can I use test reports from labs outside India?

Yes, for CRS registration, BIS accepts test reports from ILAC-accredited laboratories outside India, provided the lab is BIS-recognized for the specific product category. Check the BIS list of recognized labs to confirm if your lab qualifies. The test report must be within 90 days of application.

### What is the R-Number and where must it appear?

The R-Number is your unique CRS registration identifier (format: R-XXXXXXXXXX). It must appear alongside the Standard Mark on the product itself, or on the packaging if the product is too small. The R-Number enables traceability and verification by market surveillance authorities.

### What happens if I sell without CRS registration?

Selling electronics covered under the compulsory registration scheme without valid CRS registration is an offense under the BIS Act 2016. Penalties include product seizure, fines up to ₹10 lakh per violation, and potential criminal prosecution for repeat offenses. E-commerce platforms are required to delist non-compliant products.
