# BIS R-Number Labeling Requirements

The R-Number is your product's unique identity in the BIS CRS system. Getting the label format, size, and placement wrong can result in products being rejected by customs, delisted by e-commerce platforms, or seized by enforcement agencies.

## Understanding the R-Number format

Structure

R-XXXXXXXXXX

RFixed prefix indicating CRS registration

XXXXXXXXXX10-digit unique registration number assigned by BIS

## Required label elements

### Standard Mark logo

The BIS Standard Mark (circular logo with BIS letters) must appear alongside the R-Number. The logo has specific proportions that must be maintained.

### R-Number display

The complete R-Number (R-XXXXXXXXXX) must be clearly legible and in a font size proportional to the Standard Mark.

### Product reference

The product model number or name should appear near the Standard Mark to clearly identify which product the registration covers.

### Manufacturer identification

Brand name or manufacturer name helps identify the responsible party, though not strictly required by BIS format rules.

## Size guidelines by product type

Product TypeMinimum SizePlacement

Large products (laptops, printers)Standard Mark: 10mm diameter; R-Number: 2mm font heightRear panel or visible surface

Medium products (power adapters, routers)Standard Mark: 7mm diameter; R-Number: 1.5mm font heightProduct body or nameplate

Small products (chargers, cables)Standard Mark: 5mm diameter; R-Number: 1mm font heightProduct body; if impossible, on packaging

## Placement and permanence rules

The Standard Mark with R-Number must be permanently affixed to the product

Labels must be durable and withstand normal use conditions (temperature, humidity, handling)

Marking must remain legible throughout the product's expected lifetime

If the product is too small for direct marking, the packaging must carry the Standard Mark

For very small components, a larger assembly containing the component may carry the mark

E-commerce listings must display the R-Number in product images or description

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use a sticker for the BIS Standard Mark?

Yes, provided the sticker is permanent and durable. Paper labels that peel off or fade are not acceptable. Common acceptable methods include: laser engraving on metal/plastic, molded marks, screen printing with durable ink, or high-quality polyester labels with strong adhesive. The key requirement is that the marking remains legible throughout the product's life.

### What if my product is too small for the minimum size?

If your product is genuinely too small to accommodate even the 5mm Standard Mark, you may place the mark on the packaging instead. However, you must be prepared to justify this to BIS if questioned. Document the dimensional constraints and include this justification in your TCF. For very small products like micro-SD cards, the packaging or a larger retail blister pack carries the marking.

### Do I need to include the IS standard number on the label?

BIS does not strictly require the IS standard number on the product label for CRS registration. However, some manufacturers choose to include it for clarity (e.g., 'Conforms to IS 13252'). If you include it, ensure it is accurate and current. The mandatory elements are: Standard Mark logo + R-Number.

### Can I modify the Standard Mark design?

No. The BIS Standard Mark has a specific design with fixed proportions. You may scale it up or down proportionally, but you cannot alter the design elements, colors (must be black or single color), or proportions. Use only official BIS artwork for the Standard Mark. Modifying the mark is a violation of BIS regulations.

### What happens if my R-Number expires and I haven't renewed?

You must immediately stop using the Standard Mark with the expired R-Number. Continuing to mark products with an expired registration is an offense under the BIS Act. Products already in the market with expired registration marks may be subject to enforcement action. Apply for renewal at least 3 months before expiry to avoid gaps.

**Disclaimer:** This guide describes BIS R-Number labeling requirements based on BIS regulations and industry practice. Always verify current requirements from official BIS notifications and ensure your label artwork is reviewed before mass production.
