### CMVSS — Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for EVs

The Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) govern EVs sold or imported into Canada as complete vehicles — administered by Transport Canada. CMVSS standards are largely harmonised with US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), though divergences exist. For EVs, the critical standards are: CMVSS 305 (Electric Vehicle Safety — post-crash electric safety, shock protection, electrolyte spillage prevention), CMVSS 305.1 (Rechargeable Energy Storage System Integrity — thermal event notification requirement for the battery management system), and CMVSS 114 (Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention). Light-duty EVs must also comply with crashworthiness standards (CMVSS 208, 301) and fleet average ZEV mandate requirements under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

### EV charging equipment — CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 280

EV chargers (EVSE — Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) sold in Canada must comply with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part I (CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 10), and the dedicated EV charger standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 280 (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment).
