# CE Compliance for Displays and Monitors

Displays face CE marking requirements under LVD, EMC, and RoHS — plus separate Ecodesign energy efficiency obligations and EU energy labelling registration. It's a layered compliance stack that requires planning across both the technical file and the regulatory databases.

## Applicable directives and regulations

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

All mains-powered displays operate at voltages within LVD scope. EN 62368-1 is the primary safety standard. Key concerns: insulation, leakage current, surface temperature, and fire enclosure.

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

Displays and monitors generate significant conducted and radiated emissions from switching power supplies, backlight drivers, and high-speed display interfaces (HDMI, DisplayPort). EN 55032/55035 (multimedia equipment) apply.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

Applies to all display electronics. Backlight LEDs and their drivers, PCBs, cables, and enclosures all must meet RoHS substance limits.

ErP

### Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2021 (displays)

Sets maximum standby power (0.5W) and sleep mode power requirements, and minimum on-mode energy efficiency based on screen area and resolution.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does a monitor with USB-C video input need RED compliance?

USB-C for video transmission (DisplayPort Alt Mode) is not intentional radio transmission and does not bring the monitor into RED scope. If the monitor has built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a wireless presentation receiver, those interfaces are in RED scope. The wired display itself needs LVD, EMC, and RoHS.

### Do I need to register my displays in EPREL?

Yes. Displays covered by Regulation (EU) 2019/2021 must be registered in EPREL before being placed on the EU market. The EPREL entry generates the product sheet and QR code that must appear on the energy label. Registration is the supplier's (manufacturer's or importer's) obligation.

### What is the maximum standby power allowed for EU displays?

Under Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2021, the maximum standby power for displays is 0.5W. Networked standby (where the display maintains a network connection in standby) has a limit of 3W. Products exceeding these limits cannot be placed on the EU market.
