## Kitchen appliances and CE marking

Kitchen appliances and small home electronics are consumer products that require comprehensive CE marking compliance. The primary directives are LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Smart appliances with wireless features also need RED compliance.

Kitchen appliances present specific hazards including thermal risks from heating elements, mechanical risks from motors, and electrical risks from mains power. A thorough risk assessment is essential to identify and address these hazards in the technical file.

## Applicable directives

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

Mains-powered kitchen appliances and small home electronics operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC.

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All kitchen appliances with electronic controls, motors, heating elements, and power supplies.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

All electronic components in kitchen appliances — control boards, motors, heating elements, and displays.

GPSR

### General Product Safety Regulation 2023/988

Consumer-facing kitchen appliances not covered by sector-specific legislation — from December 2024.

## Product categories and considerations

### Small cooking appliances

Toasters, kettles, coffee makers, blenders, food processors, air fryers

Heating elements, motor safety, thermal protection, user accessibility to hot surfaces

### Major kitchen appliances

Refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, washing machines

High power consumption, complex controls, water and electrical safety, energy efficiency labeling

### Small home electronics

Vacuum cleaners, irons, hair dryers, electric shavers, electric toothbrushes

Motor safety, heating elements, battery power where applicable, water resistance

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do kitchen appliances need CE marking?

Yes. All electrical kitchen appliances sold in the EU must bear CE marking. They fall under LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Battery-powered appliances also need Battery Regulation compliance.

### What about smart kitchen appliances?

Smart appliances with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other wireless connectivity need RED compliance in addition to LVD, EMC, and RoHS. The cybersecurity requirements for RED from August 2025 also apply to smart kitchen appliances.

### Are there special requirements for appliances with heating elements?

Yes. Appliances with heating elements require additional thermal safety testing. This includes temperature limits, thermal protection devices, and safeguards against overheating. The risk assessment must specifically address thermal hazards.

### Do I need energy efficiency labeling?

Many kitchen appliances require EU energy labeling under the Ecodesign Directive. This includes refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and other major appliances. Check if your specific product category requires energy labeling.

### What about appliances that come into contact with food?

Appliances with food contact surfaces must comply with food contact material regulations (EC) No 1935/2004 in addition to CE marking. This ensures materials in contact with food are safe and do not transfer harmful substances.
