## Laboratory equipment and CE marking

Laboratory equipment and scientific instruments are precision electronic devices that require comprehensive CE marking compliance. The primary directives are LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Equipment with specialized hazards may have additional requirements.

Laboratory equipment often includes sensitive measurement electronics, high-precision sensors, and sometimes specialized sources like lasers or radiation. These features require careful attention in the risk assessment and technical documentation.

## Applicable directives

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All laboratory equipment with electronic controls, sensors, displays, and data acquisition systems.

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

Laboratory equipment operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Covers electrical safety of instruments and power supplies.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

All electronic components in laboratory equipment — control boards, sensors, and displays.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do laboratory instruments need CE marking?

Yes. All laboratory equipment sold in the EU must bear CE marking. They fall under LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Professional and industrial equipment follow the same requirements.

### What about equipment with laser sources?

Laboratory equipment with lasers must comply with the Laser Products Directive 2006/42/EC in addition to general CE marking requirements. This includes laser classification, safety labeling, and interlock requirements.

### Are there special requirements for medical laboratory equipment?

Laboratory equipment intended for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) testing falls under the IVDR Regulation (EU) 2017/746, not general CE marking. Equipment for general research use follows standard CE marking directives.

### What about equipment with high voltage or radiation?

Equipment with high voltage or radiation sources has additional requirements beyond standard CE marking. This may include specific safety standards, radiation protection measures, and sometimes Notified Body involvement.

### Do I need to test every instrument model?

Not necessarily. If models are functionally identical and use the same internal electronics, you can use a family declaration. Document the technical rationale. Significant differences in measurement accuracy or safety-critical components require separate testing.
