## POS systems and CE marking

POS systems and payment terminals are electronic devices that require comprehensive CE marking compliance. The primary directives are LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Wireless terminals also need RED compliance for radio equipment.

POS systems often include multiple components — card readers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers — that must each comply with relevant directives. Integrated systems must also demonstrate EMC compliance as a complete assembly.

## Applicable directives

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All POS systems with electronic controls, displays, printers, and card readers.

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

POS systems operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Covers electrical safety of terminals and peripherals.

RED

### Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU

Wireless POS terminals with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, or NFC communication.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

All electronic components in POS systems — control boards, displays, and communication modules.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do POS terminals need CE marking?

Yes. All POS systems sold in the EU must bear CE marking. They fall under LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and RoHS for hazardous substances. Wireless terminals also need RED compliance.

### What about payment card industry (PCI) compliance?

PCI DSS compliance is separate from CE marking. CE marking covers product safety and EMC, while PCI DSS covers payment card data security. POS terminals typically need both — CE marking for legal market access and PCI certification for payment processing.

### Do NFC readers need special EMC testing?

NFC readers operate at 13.56 MHz and require specific EMC testing for emissions and immunity. The RED harmonised standards for short-range devices cover NFC. Ensure your test lab is experienced with NFC testing requirements.

### What about integrated POS systems with cash drawers?

Integrated POS systems with cash drawers, receipt printers, and barcode scanners are assessed as a complete system. Each component must comply individually, and the integrated system must also meet EMC requirements as a whole.

### Are there special requirements for outdoor or mobile POS?

Outdoor and mobile POS terminals may need additional environmental testing for water resistance, temperature extremes, and durability. The CE mark itself must be durable enough for outdoor use conditions.
