## EMC testing overview

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) testing is a mandatory requirement for CE marking under the EMC Directive. It ensures your product doesn't emit excessive electromagnetic interference and can operate properly in its electromagnetic environment.

EMC testing must be performed at an accredited laboratory. The test report is a critical part of your technical file and demonstrates compliance with the EMC Directive's essential requirements.

## Types of EMC testing

### Emissions testing

Measures the electromagnetic energy your product radiates. Includes conducted emissions (on power lines) and radiated emissions (through air). Limits depend on product category and environment.

### Immunity testing

Tests your product's resistance to external electromagnetic disturbances. Includes electrostatic discharge (ESD), radiated RF immunity, electrical fast transients, and surge testing.

### Harmonics and flicker

Required for products connected to public power networks. Tests for harmonic current emissions and voltage flicker caused by your product's power consumption.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does EMC testing involve?

EMC testing involves two main categories: emissions (how much electromagnetic energy your product emits) and immunity (how well your product resists external electromagnetic disturbances). Testing typically takes 1-3 days depending on product complexity.

### Do I need pre-compliance testing?

Pre-compliance testing is strongly recommended but not legally required. It helps identify EMC issues early when they're cheaper to fix. Many products fail formal EMC testing on the first attempt without pre-compliance work.

### How long does EMC testing take?

Formal EMC testing typically takes 1-3 days of lab time. However, including preparation, test report generation, and potential re-testing after fixes, the complete process often takes 2-4 weeks.

### What if my product fails EMC testing?

If your product fails, you'll need to identify the root cause and implement fixes. Common issues include inadequate filtering, poor PCB layout, missing shielding, or inadequate grounding. After fixes, re-testing is required.

### Are there different requirements for different environments?

Yes. Products for residential environments have stricter emissions limits than industrial equipment. The test standard and limits depend on the intended use environment defined in your technical documentation.
