## LVD testing overview

LVD (Low Voltage Directive) testing verifies electrical safety for products operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Testing must be performed at an accredited laboratory and the test report is a critical part of your CE technical file.

LVD testing focuses on protecting users from electric shock, fire, and mechanical hazards. The tests verify insulation integrity, protective earth connections, leakage currents, and temperature limits.

## Types of LVD safety tests

### Dielectric strength test

Applies high voltage to test insulation integrity. Ensures product can withstand voltage spikes without breakdown.

### Earth continuity test

Verifies protective earth connections have low resistance. Critical for Class I equipment with exposed conductive parts.

### Leakage current test

Measures current flowing through insulation to earth. Ensures leakage is within safe limits to prevent electric shock.

### Temperature rise test

Measures component and surface temperatures during operation. Ensures no part exceeds safe temperature limits.

## Key harmonised standards

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the LVD voltage range?

The Low Voltage Directive applies to equipment operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Equipment below these voltages may be outside LVD scope but still needs EMC and RoHS compliance.

### How long does LVD testing take?

LVD testing typically takes 1-2 days of lab time for most products. Complex products with multiple power modes or high-power components may require additional time.

### What's the difference between Class I and Class II equipment?

Class I equipment relies on protective earth for safety (three-prong plugs). Class II equipment uses double insulation and doesn't require earth (two-prong plugs). The testing requirements differ for each class.

### Do battery-powered devices need LVD testing?

Battery-powered devices operating below 75V DC are typically outside LVD scope. However, if the device includes a mains-powered charger, the charger needs LVD testing. The device itself still needs EMC and RoHS compliance.

### What if my product fails LVD testing?

Common failures include inadequate creepage and clearance distances, insufficient insulation, poor earthing, or excessive temperature rise. After identifying and fixing the root cause, re-testing is required.
