# CE Marking for Consumer Electronics: Requirements, Costs & Timeline

Requirements

## What consumer electronics actually need for CE marking

### Directive mapping

Identify every applicable directive before design freeze. RED for radio, EMC for emissions/immunity, LVD for mains power, RoHS for materials, GPSR for general safety, battery regulations for power sources.

### Harmonised standards

Select current harmonised standards from the Official Journal for each directive. These standards provide presumption of conformity and define the test methods your lab will use.

### Accredited testing

Commission tests at ILAC MRA-accredited laboratories. Radio products under RED require formal testing. EMC and safety tests need accredited reports to support your Declaration of Conformity.

### Technical file

Compile product description, risk assessment, BOM, test reports, design records, user instructions, labeling, supplier declarations, and a signed EU Declaration of Conformity into a controlled structure.

### Traceability

Ensure every piece of evidence—test reports, drawings, manuals, labels—describes the exact product configuration you will ship. Version mismatches between documentation and product are a common audit failure.

### Retention

Retain the technical file and Declaration of Conformity for 10 years after the last unit is placed on the EU market. This is a legal requirement, not a suggestion.

Freeze the product configuration and map applicable directives. Select harmonised standards before committing to enclosure design, antenna placement, thermal management, or power supply selection.

### Risk assessment and documentation planning (Weeks 3–6)

Run the risk assessment in parallel with engineering. Document hazards, controls, and residual risk. Plan the technical file structure and start collecting supplier declarations and material evidence.

### Lab testing (Weeks 4–8)
