## EV charging equipment and CE marking

EV charging equipment is high-power electrical equipment that requires comprehensive CE marking compliance. The primary directives are LVD for electrical safety and EMC for electromagnetic compatibility. Smart chargers with wireless communication also need RED compliance.

In addition to CE marking, EV chargers must comply with specific technical standards including IEC 61851 for conductive charging systems and IEC 62196 for charging connectors. These standards are often harmonised under the CE directives, providing presumption of conformity.

## Applicable directives

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All EV charging equipment with power electronics and communication interfaces. Must pass emissions and immunity testing.

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

EV charging equipment operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Covers electrical safety of high-voltage charging systems.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

All electronic components in charging equipment — power electronics, control boards, and communication modules.

RED

### Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU

Smart chargers with Wi-Fi, cellular, or other wireless communication for load management and user interaction.

## Key technical standards

IEC 61851

### Electric vehicle conductive charging system

General requirements for EV charging equipment, including safety, performance, and communication protocols.

IEC 62196

### Plugs, socket-outlets and vehicle couplers

Standard for charging connectors and vehicle inlets used in Europe.

ISO 15118

### Vehicle to grid communication interface

Communication protocols for smart charging and bidirectional power flow.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do home EV chargers need CE marking?

Yes. All EV charging equipment sold in the EU, including home wallboxes, must bear CE marking. They fall under LVD for electrical safety and EMC for electromagnetic compatibility. Smart chargers with wireless features also need RED.

### What about DC fast chargers?

DC fast chargers have additional requirements due to higher voltages and currents. They still need CE marking under LVD and EMC, but may require additional safety assessments. The technical file must address specific high-voltage hazards.

### Do I need a Notified Body for EV chargers?

Most EV chargers can self-certify under Module A if harmonised standards exist and are applied. However, certain high-power or specialized installations may require Notified Body involvement. Review the specific requirements for your charger type.

### What about smart charging and communication features?

Smart chargers with communication features (Wi-Fi, cellular, PLC) need RED compliance in addition to EMC and LVD. The cybersecurity requirements for RED from August 2025 also apply to smart charging equipment.

### Are there different requirements for public vs private chargers?

The core CE marking requirements are the same, but public chargers may have additional considerations for payment systems, user authentication, and accessibility. Both require comprehensive risk assessment and compliance with applicable directives.
