## HVAC equipment and CE marking

HVAC and climate control equipment are complex electromechanical systems that require comprehensive CE marking compliance. The primary directives are LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and ErP for energy efficiency. Smart systems with wireless features also need RED compliance.

HVAC equipment often includes large motors, compressors, and variable speed drives that can generate significant electromagnetic emissions. Proper EMC design and testing are essential. Energy efficiency requirements under the ErP Directive must also be demonstrated.

## Applicable directives

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All HVAC equipment with electronic controls, compressors, fans, and variable speed drives.

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

HVAC equipment operating at 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC. Covers electrical safety of motors and controls.

ErP

### Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC

Air conditioners, heat pumps, and ventilation equipment with minimum energy efficiency requirements.

RoHS

### RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU

All electronic components in HVAC equipment — control boards, sensors, and power electronics.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do HVAC systems need CE marking?

Yes. All HVAC equipment sold in the EU must bear CE marking. They fall under LVD for electrical safety, EMC for electromagnetic compatibility, and ErP for energy efficiency. Large systems may have additional requirements.

### What about heat pumps?

Heat pumps require CE marking under LVD, EMC, and ErP directives. They also need to meet specific seasonal energy efficiency requirements. The technical file must demonstrate compliance with applicable energy efficiency regulations.

### Do I need energy labeling?

Many HVAC products require EU energy labeling under the Ecodesign Directive. This includes air conditioners, heat pumps, and ventilation equipment. Check if your specific product category requires energy labeling and EPREL registration.

### Are there special requirements for refrigerants?

HVAC equipment using refrigerants must comply with F-Gas Regulation (EU) No 517/2014 for refrigerant handling and reporting. This is separate from CE marking but must be addressed for legal compliance.

### What about smart HVAC systems?

Smart HVAC systems with wireless communication need RED compliance in addition to LVD, EMC, and ErP. The cybersecurity requirements for RED from August 2025 also apply to connected HVAC equipment.
