# CE Marking for Industrial Equipment: Full Guide

Industrial equipment faces some of the most stringent CE requirements. The Machinery Regulation classifies equipment by risk level, with high-risk machinery requiring Notified Body involvement. This guide covers what founders need to know about CE marking for industrial equipment.

## Industrial equipment is risk-classified

Unlike consumer electronics, where most products can self-certify, industrial equipment is explicitly risk-classified under the Machinery Regulation. Annex I machinery—high-risk equipment like lifts, presses, and certain woodworking machines—requires Notified Body involvement. Non-Annex I machinery can typically self-certify.

The classification is not optional. It is determined by the type of equipment, its intended use, and the hazards it presents. Misclassifying your equipment or assuming self-certification when Notified Body involvement is required is a serious compliance error that can block market access and lead to enforcement.

## Applicable regulations for industrial equipment

### Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230

Replaces the Machinery Directive. Covers safety requirements for machinery, safety components, and lifting equipment. Annex I machinery requires Notified Body involvement.

### EMC Directive

Industrial environments have stricter EMC limits than residential. EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4 are the generic industrial EMC standards.

### LVD (if applicable)

Industrial equipment operating at 50–1000V AC falls under LVD. Industrial safety standards like IEC 60204-1 apply.

### ATEX (if explosive atmosphere)

If equipment is intended for use in explosive atmospheres, ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU applies with additional certification requirements.

### Mechanical hazards

Moving parts, cutting edges, crushing points, falling objects, and ejection of parts. Guards, interlocks, and protective measures are required.

### Electrical hazards

Electric shock, arc flash, and thermal hazards. Industrial equipment often operates at higher voltages and currents than consumer products.

### Thermal hazards

Hot surfaces, fire risk from overheating, and cold stress. Temperature limits and thermal protection are required.

### Noise and vibration

Industrial equipment often generates high noise and vibration levels. Noise emission must be measured and documented.
