# CE Marking for Industrial Sensors and Measurement Equipment

Industrial sensors face tougher EMC immunity requirements than consumer electronics, and those intended for legally relevant measurements need MID compliance on top. Sensors deployed in explosive atmospheres add ATEX to the stack. Getting the directive scope right is the first step.

## Applicable directives

EMC

### EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

All sensors with active electronics must meet EMC essential requirements. Industrial environments have stricter immunity requirements — the EN 61000-4 test series covers conducted, radiated, ESD, burst, and surge immunity.

LVD

### Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU

Sensors with mains supply or output voltages between 50–1000V AC or 75–1500V DC need LVD coverage. Most 24V DC industrial sensors are below the LVD threshold but should still address safety in the technical file.

MID

### Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU

Sensors used in legally relevant measurements (e.g., flow meters for billing, weighing instruments for trade) require MID compliance, including metrological type examination and Notified Body involvement.

ATEX

### ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU

Sensors intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 0/1/2 gas, Zone 20/21/22 dust) must comply with ATEX and carry the Ex marking. This requires Notified Body certification for most categories.

RED

### RED 2014/53/EU (if wireless)

Wireless industrial sensors (WirelessHART, ISA100, Zigbee, LoRa) are radio equipment under RED and require radio performance and EMC testing per RED essential requirements.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) — 4 kV contact, 8 kV air for industrial environments

Radiated RF immunity — 10 V/m field strength for industrial (vs 3 V/m for residential)

Electrical fast transient/burst — from relay switching and motor drives

EN 61000-4-5

Surge immunity — 2 kV differential, 4 kV common mode on supply lines

EN 61000-4-6

Conducted RF immunity — 10 Vrms for industrial environments

EN 61000-4-8

## Frequently asked questions

### What EMC standard applies to industrial sensors?

EN 61326-1 (Electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use — EMC requirements) is the primary harmonised standard for industrial measurement equipment. It defines both emissions limits and immunity test levels for different environments. The standard differentiates between basic EMC environments, industrial environments, and controlled electromagnetic environments.

### My sensor operates at 24V DC — does it need LVD compliance?

Sensors operating solely at 24V DC are below the LVD threshold of 75V DC and are outside LVD scope. However, any associated power supply unit, transmitter, or signal conditioning unit that operates at mains voltage does need LVD coverage. The sensor itself still needs EMC and RoHS compliance.

### Does an industrial sensor used for process monitoring (non-billing) need MID compliance?

Only if the measurements have legal trade or fiscal significance. A temperature sensor monitoring a process for quality control purposes is not a measuring instrument in the MID sense. A flow meter used to bill a customer for natural gas consumption is. The key test is whether the measurement result has a direct legal or commercial consequence.
