# CE Marking Timeline: How Long Does It Really Take?

The honest answer: 8–16 weeks for most electronics hardware, assuming no test failures. With failures, add 4–8 weeks per re-test cycle. The biggest mistake hardware teams make is not starting the CE process until 4 weeks before a planned ship date.

Identifying which directives apply, selecting the correct harmonised standards, and confirming the conformity assessment route. Can be done in parallel with hardware finalisation.

Running pre-compliance EMC scans and basic safety checks in-house or at a pre-compliance lab to catch design issues before formal testing. Iterating on layout, filtering, or enclosure changes.

Booking slots at an accredited test laboratory. Lead times vary significantly by lab and time of year — popular labs booking 6–8 weeks ahead is normal. Preparing pre-production samples that meet the lab's requirements takes additional time.

The actual time spent in the test lab. A typical consumer electronics product with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (RED, LVD) may take 5–10 business days. Complex products with many radio technologies or extensive safety testing take longer.

If any test fails, the product must be redesigned, rebuilt, and retested. This can mean going back in the lab queue. One failed emission limit can add 4–8 weeks to the timeline.

Assembling the full technical file, drafting the EU Declaration of Conformity, and having it reviewed and signed by an authorised signatory.
