## RED testing overview

RED (Radio Equipment Directive) testing is mandatory for any product with intentional radio transmission. The directive has three essential requirements: effective use of radio spectrum, electromagnetic compatibility, and network protection.

RED testing must be performed at an accredited laboratory. From August 2025, new cybersecurity requirements also apply to radio equipment, adding secure software updates and access control to the compliance scope.

## Essential requirements

### Effective use of spectrum

Radio equipment must efficiently use radio spectrum to avoid harmful interference. Testing verifies transmit power, frequency stability, and modulation characteristics.

### Electromagnetic compatibility

Radio equipment must not cause harmful interference to other radio services and must have adequate immunity to interference. This is tested through EMC requirements specific to radio.

### Network protection

Equipment connecting to public communications networks must not harm the network. Testing includes network compatibility and防止滥用 measures.

## Cybersecurity requirements

### Cybersecurity requirements (from August 2025)

RED Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 introduces mandatory cybersecurity requirements for radio equipment. This includes secure software updates, access control, and vulnerability management.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What products need RED testing?

Any product with intentional radio transmission needs RED compliance. This includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, cellular, NFC, and proprietary radio. Products that only receive radio (like GPS receivers) may have different requirements.

### How long does RED testing take?

RED testing typically takes 2-5 days depending on the number of radio bands and technologies. Products with multiple radio interfaces (Wi-Fi + Bluetooth + cellular) require more testing time.

### What are the new cybersecurity requirements?

From August 2025, RED equipment must comply with cybersecurity requirements including: no universal default passwords, secure software update mechanisms, vulnerability disclosure processes, and protection against unauthorized access.

### Do I need a Notified Body for RED?

Most radio products can self-certify under Module A if harmonised standards exist. However, if no harmonised standard applies to your radio technology, or if you're using non-standard frequencies, Notified Body involvement may be required.

### What about products with multiple radios?

Products with multiple radios (e.g., Wi-Fi + Bluetooth) need testing for each radio interface. The technical file must document compliance for each radio technology and demonstrate that they don't interfere with each other.
