# Gas Appliances Regulation (EU) 2016/426

Every gas appliance placed on the EU market requires Notified Body type examination — no exceptions. This is one of the few CE frameworks without a self-certification route. Understanding the gas type categories used across EU member states is also critical: an appliance approved for G20 natural gas may not function correctly on G30 LPG.

## Essential requirements

Annex I §1

### General conditions

Appliances must be designed and built so that they operate safely. They must not endanger people, domestic animals, or property when used normally. Safety must be ensured through material selection, construction design, and the provision of adequate protective devices.

Annex I §2

### Materials

Materials must be appropriate for the intended purpose and withstand the mechanical, chemical, and thermal conditions expected in service. Surfaces in contact with food must comply with relevant food contact regulations.

Annex I §3

### Design and construction

Appliances must be designed so that burner ignition, re-ignition, and stability are reliable. Flame supervision devices must prevent unburned gas release if the flame fails. Appliances must withstand the thermal stresses likely in normal use.

Annex I §5

### Energy efficiency

Appliances must use energy efficiently in relation to their intended purpose and technical constraints. The Regulation links to Ecodesign requirements for gas boilers, water heaters, and space heaters where applicable.

Annex I §6

### Instructions and information

Appliances must be accompanied by technical instructions for the installer, user instructions, and a warning plate. For appliances suitable for multiple gas types, each intended gas type must be stated. Country-specific installation conditions must be addressed.

## EU gas types — why they matter for CE marking

The EU does not use a single gas type. Different regions use different gas compositions and supply pressures. Your CE marking scope must specify which gas types the appliance is approved for, and the Notified Body type examination must cover all declared gas types.

G20Natural gas (methane)Wobbe: ~50 MJ/m³

Most EU countries including Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy

G25Natural gas (Groningen-type)Wobbe: ~43 MJ/m³

Netherlands and surrounding regions (historic, largely phased out)

G30LPG ButaneWobbe: ~73 MJ/m³

South and central Europe, portable appliances

G31LPG PropaneWobbe: ~76 MJ/m³

Off-grid and portable, also rural areas across EU

## Key harmonised standards

EN 30-1-1

Domestic cooking appliances burning gas — safety

EN 483

Gas-fired central heating boilers — type C boilers (condensing)

EN 26

Instantaneous gas water heaters for sanitary use

EN 509

Decorative fuel-effect gas appliances

EN 1020

Non-domestic gas-fired forced convection air heaters

EN 13611

Safety and control devices for gas burners and gas-burning appliances

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a Notified Body always required for gas appliances?

Yes. The Gas Appliances Regulation requires every gas appliance to undergo EU type-examination by a Notified Body (Article 14). This is one of the few CE frameworks where Module B type examination is mandatory for all products — there is no self-certification route. The Notified Body examines the design and issues a type-examination certificate, which the manufacturer then uses as the basis for production.

### Does the Gas Appliances Regulation cover commercial catering equipment?

Yes. The Regulation covers appliances used for cooking, heating, hot water production, refrigeration, lighting, and washing using gaseous fuels — in both domestic and commercial settings. Commercial catering gas equipment (ranges, salamanders, fryers) falls in scope. The applicable harmonised standards for commercial catering equipment differ from domestic standards, so verify the correct standard series for your product category.

### Do camping stoves and portable gas appliances need gas appliance CE marking?

Yes. Portable gas appliances using butane or propane cartridges are within scope of the Gas Appliances Regulation provided they intentionally burn gas. The relevant standards for portable appliances include EN 521 (specifications for dedicated LPG appliances). Verify the gas type stated on the cartridge matches what your appliance is designed for.

### What gas types must be declared on a gas appliance?

The Regulation requires the appliance documentation and instruction manual to state the category of gas the appliance is designed for (e.g., II2H3P for an appliance tested on G20 natural gas and adapted for G30/G31 LPG). The gas category symbol must appear on the appliance's data plate. If the appliance is suitable for more than one gas type, all types and supply pressures must be listed.

**Disclaimer:** Educational resource only. Gas appliance compliance involves safety-critical systems — always work with a qualified Notified Body and accredited test laboratory for gas type testing and type examination.
