# India Product Labeling Requirements: Mandatory Fields and Language Rules

India's product labeling requirements span multiple statutes — Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011, Consumer Protection Act 2019, and product-specific regulations (BIS, FSSAI). Selling products with incorrect or missing MRP, absent importer details, or non-metric quantity declarations can result in product seizure and penalties.

## Mandatory label fields

### Name and address of manufacturer/packer/importer

Legal Metrology (PC) Rules 2011, Rule 6(1)(a)

For imported goods: name and address of Indian importer is mandatory on label. Manufacturer's country address may also be needed.

### Country of Origin

Rule 6(1)(b) of PC Rules 2011; Consumer Protection Act 2019

Must state country where product was manufactured. 'Made in China', 'Made in Germany' etc. Foreign country names must be in English or Hindi.

### Net Quantity (weight, volume, or number)

Rule 6(1)(c)

Must be declared in standard metric units — grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters. Both numbers and units must be legible. Minimum font size requirements apply.

### Month and Year of Manufacture or Packing

Rule 6(1)(d)

Format: 'Mfg: MM/YYYY' or spelled out. Expiry or best before date also required where applicable.

### Maximum Retail Price (MRP)

Rule 6(1)(f) — mandatory for pre-packaged goods

MRP must include all taxes. Format: 'MRP ₹ \[amount\] (Inclusive of all taxes)'. Must be declared in Indian Rupees only.

### Consumer complaint information

Rule 6(1)(g) — Consumer Protection Act 2019

Name, address, telephone number, and email address of entity handling consumer complaints in India.

### BIS Registration or FSSAI license number

Applicable for regulated products

If product requires BIS CRS/ISI Mark: R-Number and Standard Mark must appear. If food product: FSSAI license number mandatory.

## Language and font size rules

### Primary language requirement

All mandatory label information must be in English or Hindi. Any other Indian language may be used additionally but cannot replace English/Hindi for mandatory fields.

### Font size — net quantity

Net quantity font size is specified by the declared quantity: up to 50g/ml: minimum 2mm; 51–200g/ml: minimum 4mm; 201–500g/ml: minimum 6mm; above 500g/ml: minimum 8mm.

### MRP font size

MRP must be in a font size not less than 4mm for retail packaged goods. For small packages, minimum 1mm is acceptable where space is extremely limited.

### Legibility and contrast

All mandatory label information must be 'clearly and conspicuously' printed. Contrast between text and background must ensure readability. Embossed-only labeling without color contrast is generally not acceptable for most fields.

### Electronic products — additional fields

Electronics must also show: model number, BIS/WPC/TEC registration numbers, safety warnings, electrical ratings, and country of origin. These requirements overlay the general labeling rules.

## Common labeling mistakes

MRP not declared in Indian Rupees — foreign currency prices are not acceptable on Indian market labels

Country of origin missing or vague ('assembled' without stating manufacturing country)

Importer details absent — foreign products must show Indian importer's full address and contact

Net quantity in non-metric units (ounces, pounds, fluid oz) — India requires SI/metric units

Font size too small for net quantity — common mistake for small products with limited label space

Missing consumer complaint contact information required by Consumer Protection Act 2019

Generic BIS Standard Mark without specific R-Number — both must appear on regulated products

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use a sticker label added after import to meet India labeling requirements?

Yes — imported products can use a sticker applied on import to add mandatory Indian label information (MRP, importer details, country of origin, etc.) that was not on the original foreign-market label. The sticker must not obscure mandatory original label information. For e-commerce imports (B2C), each individual unit must carry the compliant label — bulk labeling at warehouse level after customs clearance is acceptable if done before sale to consumer.

### Is the MRP required for all products sold in India?

MRP is mandatory for pre-packaged goods sold to consumers. It applies to both domestically manufactured and imported pre-packaged consumer goods. B2B sales of industrial products or raw materials are generally exempt from MRP requirements. For e-commerce, the listed price must not exceed the declared MRP on the product. Selling above MRP is a punishable offense under the Legal Metrology Act.

### What is the penalty for incorrect or missing MRP labeling in India?

Violations of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules can result in fines up to ₹25,000 for first offense and ₹50,000 for repeat offenses under the Legal Metrology Act 2009. Legal Metrology officers can seize goods, cancel licenses, and initiate prosecution. E-commerce platforms are jointly liable if they knowingly list products with non-compliant labeling.

**Disclaimer:** Labeling requirements span Legal Metrology Act, Consumer Protection Act, and product-specific regulations. Requirements are updated through notifications. Always verify current requirements before finalizing label artwork for India market launch.
