# UK Battery Regulations: Placement and Waste Compliance Guide

The Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 (as amended) govern the placing on the market and end-of-life management of batteries in the UK. The regulations cover substance restrictions, labeling requirements, producer registration, and financing of waste battery collection and recycling.

## Battery categories

### Portable batteries

AA, AAA, mobile phone batteries, laptop batteries

Sealed, can be hand-carried, under 4kg

### Automotive batteries

Car starter batteries, motive power batteries

Vehicle starter, lighting, ignition

### Industrial batteries

Forklift batteries, uninterruptible power supplies

Industrial or professional use, over 4kg

## Labeling requirements

Crossed-out wheeled bin symbol (indicating separate collection)

Chemical symbol for mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), or lead (Pb) if content exceeds thresholds

Capacity information for portable and automotive batteries (in Wh or Ah as applicable)

Battery chemistry for rechargeable portable batteries

QR code providing access to further information (newer requirements)

## Producer compliance process

01

### Producer registration

Register as a battery producer with the appropriate environment agency if placing batteries on the UK market. This includes manufacturers, importers, and distance sellers.

02

### Compliance scheme or direct registration

Join a battery compliance scheme or register directly with your environment agency. Small producers may have simplified requirements.

03

### Collection and recycling financing

Finance the collection and recycling of waste batteries. Producer obligations are based on market share of batteries placed on the market.

04

### Reporting

Report volumes of batteries placed on the market by chemistry type and weight. Maintain records for at least 4 years.

## Substance restrictions

The Batteries and Accumulators Regulations place strict limits on hazardous substances:

Mercury (Hg)

0.0005% (5 ppm)

Cadmium (Cd)

0.002% (20 ppm)

Note: Cadmium restrictions have exemptions for emergency and alarm systems, medical equipment, and cordless power tools (subject to time limits).

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need to register as a battery producer?

You must register as a battery producer if you place batteries on the UK market for the first time, including manufacturing batteries in the UK, importing batteries, or selling batteries to end users through distance selling.

### What batteries need the crossed-out bin symbol?

All batteries placed on the UK market must display the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol to indicate they should be collected separately and not disposed of with household waste. Additional chemical symbols (Hg, Cd, Pb) are required if those substances exceed specified thresholds.

### Are there restrictions on battery substances?

Yes, the Batteries and Accumulators Regulations place limits on mercury and cadmium content in portable batteries. Mercury content is restricted to 0.0005% by weight, and cadmium is restricted to 0.002% in portable batteries (with exemptions for certain applications).
