## Drone categories (C0-C4)

C0(<250g)

Maximum speed 19m/s, height restricted | Can fly in subcategory A1

C1(<900g)

No transponder required, height restricted | Can fly in subcategory A1

C2(<4kg)

Low speed mode, geo-awareness | Can fly in subcategory A2 with remote pilot competency

C3(<25kg)

Remote identification may be required | Can fly in subcategory A3

C4(<25kg)

Traditional model aircraft | Can fly in subcategory A3

## Operational categories

OpenLow risk

No CAA authorization required, follow operational rules

SpecificMedium risk

Operational authorization or PDRA from CAA required

CertifiedHigh risk

Certification required similar to manned aviation

## Registration and competency

01

### Register as operator

Register with CAA, obtain operator ID, display on drone

02

### Remote pilot competency

Pass online theory test for flyer ID (C0-C2) or complete course for A2 CofC (C2 in A2)

03

### Product conformity

Ensure drone has UKCA/CE marking, meets class requirements

04

### Insurance

Obtain appropriate liability insurance for commercial or specific operations

## Product compliance requirements

Drones placed on the UK market must comply with:

* Radio Equipment Regulations (if equipped with radio)
*   EMC Regulations
*   Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations
*   RoHS Regulations
*   Product-specific drone classification requirements (C0-C4)

Class-marked drones (C0-C4) have specific technical requirements regarding maximum speed, geo-awareness capabilities, noise limits, and remote identification. The manufacturer must declare compliance and affix the appropriate class mark.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need to register my drone in the UK?

If your drone has a camera or weighs over 250g, you must register as an operator with the CAA and obtain an operator ID. You may also need a flyer ID by passing a theory test. Registration is mandatory before flying.

### What product compliance is required for drones?

Drones placed on the UK market must meet UKCA marking requirements. This includes radio equipment compliance, EMC, electrical safety, and meeting the specific class requirements (C0-C4). The drone should have a class identification label if it meets the requirements.

### Can I fly a foreign-registered drone in the UK?

Visitors can fly drones in the UK following UK regulations. If you have an EU drone class mark, this is recognized in the UK. Ensure you have appropriate insurance and comply with operational category rules.
