# UK Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products (ErP): Regulations and Compliance Guide

UK Ecodesign and Energy Labelling regulations set minimum energy performance standards and labelling requirements for energy-related products sold in Great Britain. Non-compliance can result in product removal from sale, retailer fines, and EPLPD database issues that block online listings. This guide covers which products are in scope, what the requirements mean in practice, and how to get compliant.

Domestic boilers (gas and oil)Seasonal space heating energy efficiency requirements; NOx emission limitsEN 15502 series

Domestic hot water heatersEnergy efficiency class requirements; standby heat loss limitsEN 12897, EN 13203

LED lamps and luminairesMinimum luminous efficacy (lm/W); power factor; flicker limits; mercury prohibitionEN 62612, EN 61347

Electric motors (1 phase and 3 phase)Minimum IE efficiency class requirements (IE2, IE3 depending on output range)EN 60034-2-1

Computers and serversEnergy Star equivalent performance requirements; off-mode and sleep mode power limitsEnergy Star v8.0 or equivalent

Televisions and electronic displaysMaximum on-mode power consumption (W); automatic brightness control; standby ≤0.5WEN 50564, IEC 62087

Washing machines and dishwashersMinimum EPREL energy efficiency class; rated energy per cycle; noise limitsEN 60456, EN 50242

## Compliance steps

01

### Confirm product scope under applicable UK Ecodesign SI

UK Ecodesign requirements are implemented through specific Statutory Instruments (SIs). Check which SI covers your product category — not all energy-related products are in scope. Review the current list of UK Ecodesign SIs on gov.uk.

02

### Measure performance to applicable test standards

Commission testing at an accredited laboratory. Performance metrics (efficiency, power consumption, standby power, noise) must be measured using the specified test standards. Declared values must reflect the full statistical range of production units.

03

### Register on UK Energy Label Product Database (EPLPD)

Products subject to UK energy labelling must be registered on the EPLPD before placing on the GB market (or offering online). Retailers must display energy labels using data from the EPLPD. Registration is per model.

04

### Prepare product technical documentation

Technical documentation must include measured performance values, calculation methods, test reports, and product information for market surveillance. Retain for 10 years after the last unit is placed on the market.

05

### Affix energy label and ensure product information sheet is available

UK energy labels must be displayed at point of sale (physical and online). Product information sheets (fiche) must be accessible in the EPLPD and provided to distributors on request.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the UK Ecodesign framework the same as the EU Ecodesign Regulation?

The UK retained EU Ecodesign implementing regulations as UK law after Brexit (under the Ecodesign for Energy-Related Products and Energy Information Regulations 2021). The core requirements are technically the same for most product categories at the time of retention. However, the UK can now diverge from EU Ecodesign updates — check gov.uk for any UK-specific amendments to individual product SIs since 2021. For the EU market, compliance with EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2009/125 and its implementing regulations remains separately required.

### Can I use the EU EPREL database registration for the UK market?

No. The EU EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) database and the UK EPLPD (UK Energy Label Product Database) are separate systems. Products must be registered in both databases independently. The data inputs are similar but the registration must be done separately on the UK gov.uk system for products sold in Great Britain.

### Do Ecodesign requirements affect products sold online in the UK?

Yes, and enforcement has increased specifically for online sales. Online retailers must display the energy label visually near the price on product listing pages. The label must be retrieved from or consistent with the EPLPD. OPSS has conducted enforcement actions targeting online retailers displaying incorrect or missing energy labels. The rules apply equally to UK-based sellers and overseas sellers shipping direct to UK consumers.
