# UK EMC Regulations: Electromagnetic Compatibility Guide

The Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016 (as amended) ensure electrical and electronic apparatus can operate without generating or being affected by electromagnetic disturbances. Compliance is mandatory for virtually all electrical products placed on the Great Britain market.

## EMC essential requirements

### Emission limits

Products must not generate electromagnetic disturbances that exceed levels allowing radio and telecommunications equipment and other apparatus to operate as intended.

### Immunity requirements

Products must have an adequate level of intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic disturbances to enable them to operate as intended.

### Specific conditions for fixed installations

Fixed installations must be installed applying good engineering practices and respecting information on intended use from manufacturers of components.

## Key EMC testing standards

EN 55032Electromagnetic compatibility of multimedia equipment - emission requirements

EN 55035Electromagnetic compatibility of multimedia equipment - immunity requirements

EN 61000-3-2Limits for harmonic current emissions

EN 61000-3-3Limitation of voltage changes, voltage fluctuations and flicker

EN 61000-4 seriesTesting and measurement techniques for immunity

EN 301 489 seriesEMC for radio equipment

## Compliance process

EMC compliance begins with identifying applicable standards based on your product type and intended environment. Consumer products, industrial equipment, and medical devices each have specific EMC requirements. Once standards are identified, testing is conducted at a UKAS-accredited laboratory or equivalent.

Testing typically covers both emissions (conducted and radiated) and immunity (ESD, radiated fields, conducted disturbances, surges, and more). Products that incorporate radio functionality must meet both EMC and Radio Equipment Regulations requirements.

After successful testing, compile your technical documentation including test reports, technical descriptions, and declarations. Affix UKCA marking (or CE marking where still recognized) before placing on the GB market.

## Fixed installations and specific provisions

Fixed installations—combinations of apparatus, components, and other devices assembled and installed at a predetermined location—have specific compliance routes. They must comply with essential requirements but follow a different conformity assessment procedure than individual products.

Manufacturers of components intended for fixed installations must provide information on intended use and compliance measures. Installers must apply good engineering practices and document these measures in a technical file maintained for inspection.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which products need EMC compliance in the UK?

Most electrical and electronic apparatus sold in Great Britain must comply with EMC regulations. This includes consumer electronics, IT equipment, industrial equipment, medical devices, and radio equipment. Specific exemptions exist for certain product categories.

### Can I use EU EMC test reports for UKCA marking?

Yes, EMC test reports from EU Notified Bodies or accredited laboratories are generally accepted for UKCA marking. However, ensure the standards referenced match UK designated standards, which may differ from EU harmonised standards in some cases.

### What is the difference between emission and immunity testing?

Emission testing measures the electromagnetic energy your product emits to ensure it doesn't interfere with other devices. Immunity testing subjects your product to electromagnetic disturbances to verify it operates correctly in real-world electromagnetic environments.
