# UK Product Labeling Requirements: Mandatory Fields, Language Rules, and Format

UK product labeling requirements are a patchwork of obligations from multiple regulations — UKCA marking placement, manufacturer address requirements, WEEE symbol, energy labels, safety warnings, and language rules all applying simultaneously depending on the product category. Getting the label right is the last step before market entry, and a non-compliant label can trigger OPSS enforcement even if the underlying product is technically compliant.

## Mandatory label elements for GB market products

### UKCA marking

Must appear on the product (or packaging if product too small) when required by applicable UK regulations. Must be visible, legible, and indelible. Minimum height 5mm where not specified by regulation.

**Applies to:** All UKCA-regulated products

### Manufacturer name and address

The name and registered address of the manufacturer (or UK Responsible Person for non-UK manufacturers) must appear on the product or packaging. PO Box addresses are not acceptable.

**Applies to:** All regulated products; required by most UK product regulations

### Product model/type identifier

Batch number, lot number, serial number, or other identifier allowing traceability to production records. Exact format varies by regulation and product category.

**Applies to:** All UKCA-regulated products; specific formats required for medical devices, toys, PPE

### Country of origin (customs declaration)

For customs declaration purposes, country of origin must be accurately stated on customs documentation. Not always required on the physical product label for non-food items.

**Applies to:** All imports; mandatory on label for food products; not universally required on non-food product label

### UK WEEE marking (crossed-out wheelie bin)

The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol must appear on electrical and electronic equipment placed on the GB market. Indicates separate collection — do not dispose in general waste.

**Applies to:** All EEE products subject to UK WEEE Regulations

### Safety warnings

Product-specific safety warnings required by applicable regulations: e.g., toy age warnings ('Not suitable for children under 36 months'), electrical safety warnings, chemical hazard statements (CLP Regulation), battery disposal warnings.

**Applies to:** Varies by product category and applicable regulation

### Energy label (A–G scale)

Mandatory for products subject to UK Ecodesign/Energy Information Regulations (white goods, TVs, lamps, tyres, etc.). Energy label must be displayed on product, in packaging, and on online listings.

**Applies to:** Products covered by UK Ecodesign and Energy Information Regulations

## Language requirements for UK product labels

English is required for GB market: Product labels, instructions, and safety information for the Great Britain market must be in English. Other languages may additionally appear alongside English.

Northern Ireland: English and Irish permitted: For the Northern Ireland market (where EU Single Market rules apply under the Windsor Framework), labeling may need to comply with EU requirements which also accept English and may require additional languages depending on the product regulation.

Instructions for use must be in English: Instructions must be in the language(s) of the country where the product is supplied. For GB market, English instructions are mandatory. They may be provided electronically for some product categories if the regulation permits.

No legal requirement for Welsh on most products: Welsh language requirements on product labels apply to specific regulated sectors (e.g., food products sold in Wales may have Welsh Government requirements). General consumer products do not have a universal Welsh language labeling requirement.

## Common labeling mistakes to avoid

✕Using a PO Box or EU address instead of a UK registered address for the Responsible Person/manufacturer address

✕Placing UKCA marking on packaging but not on the product (where the product is large enough to carry it)

✕Using CE mark styling (circle-based) for the UKCA mark — the UKCA mark has a specific design that must be used

✕Missing the WEEE crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on EEE products

✕Incorrect energy label class or scale — labeling with old A+/A++/A+++ scale after the UK moved to the new A–G rescaled labels

✕Failing to include safety warnings required by the specific product regulation (e.g., toy age warnings, electrical hazard triangles)

## Frequently asked questions

### Can the manufacturer's name on the product label be different from the UK Responsible Person's name?

Yes. For non-UK manufacturers, the product must show the manufacturer's name and address AND the UK Responsible Person's name and address. Both are required — not one or the other. The manufacturer's details identify who made the product; the UKRP's details provide a UK-based point of contact for consumers and OPSS. If the product is too small to carry both sets of information, they may appear on the packaging or accompanying documentation, subject to specific regulation requirements.

### Is the UKCA mark required on software or digital products?

No — the UKCA mark is a physical product marking for tangible goods placed on the GB market. It does not apply to standalone software, apps, or digital services. However, if software is embedded in a regulated hardware product (e.g., firmware in a medical device or radio equipment), the hardware carries the UKCA mark and the software is part of the product's conformity assessment — but the software itself does not bear a UKCA mark.

### What size must the UKCA marking be on a small product?

The UK CA marking must be at least 5mm in height when no specific minimum size is set by the applicable regulation. Some regulations specify different minimum heights. Where the product is too small to accommodate the UKCA mark directly, the mark can appear on the packaging instead (or on an accompanying document for certain product categories). The UKCA mark must remain visible, legible, and indelible and must not be placed adjacent to other marks that could cause confusion about its meaning.
