# UK Radio Equipment Regulations: GB Market Compliance Guide

The Radio Equipment Regulations 2017 (as amended) set the requirements for radio equipment placed on the Great Britain market. Understanding designated standards, testing requirements, and the GB/NI market split is essential for compliant market entry.

## Compliance process step-by-step

01

### Determine radio functionality and frequency bands

Identify all radio transmitters and receivers in your product, their frequency bands, power levels, and intended use. This determines which essential requirements and designated standards apply.

02

### Select applicable UK designated standards

Review the UK government's designated standards list for radio equipment. Key standards include EN 300 328 for wideband transmission systems, EN 301 893 for 5 GHz WLAN, and EN 301 511 for GSM mobile stations.

03

### Conduct testing at UK-approved laboratory

Commission radio testing at a UKAS-accredited laboratory or an EU Notified Body for CE marking. Tests cover radio spectrum, electromagnetic compatibility, and safety requirements.

04

### Compile technical documentation

Create a technical file including product description, circuit diagrams, BOM, test reports, risk assessment, user manual, and UK Declaration of Conformity. Retain for 10 years.

05

### Affix UKCA marking and place on GB market

Apply UKCA marking to the product, packaging, or documentation. Ensure the product meets all essential requirements before placing on the Great Britain market.

## Key UK designated standards

EN 300 328Wideband transmission systems (2.4 GHz WLAN, Bluetooth)

EN 301 8935 GHz high performance RLAN

EN 301 511GSM mobile stations

EN 301 908-1IMT cellular networks (3G, 4G, 5G base stations and terminals)

EN 300 220Short Range Devices (SRD) in non-harmonized frequency bands

EN 301 489 seriesEMC for radio equipment

Note: Always verify the current designated standards list on the UK government website. Standards are regularly updated.

## Essential requirements overview

Radio equipment placed on the GB market must meet essential requirements covering safety, electromagnetic compatibility, efficient spectrum use, and specific requirements for certain equipment types. The regulations implement requirements similar to the EU Radio Equipment Directive, but with UK-specific provisions.

Key areas include: protection of health and safety of persons and domestic animals; adequate level of electromagnetic compatibility; efficient use of spectrum to avoid harmful interference; and for certain equipment, accessibility requirements and interoperability with emergency services.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need UKCA or CE marking for radio equipment in Great Britain?

Both are currently accepted for most radio equipment. CE marking continues to be recognized indefinitely in Great Britain. However, UKCA marking is the long-term GB conformity mark and may become mandatory in the future.

### What about radio equipment for Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland follows EU rules for radio equipment. CE marking is required. If third-party assessment is done by a UK body, the UKNI marking must be used alongside CE.

### How long does radio equipment compliance take?

Typically 4–8 weeks from testing to compliance. Radio testing itself takes 2–4 weeks depending on the number of bands and protocols. Documentation preparation adds another 2–4 weeks.
