# UKCA Marking: Complete Guide for Great Britain Market Entry

The UKCA marking is the conformity assessment marking required for products placed on the Great Britain market. Understanding when you need UKCA versus CE, how the GB/NI split affects your compliance, and what documentation is required can make the difference between smooth market entry and costly delays.

Understanding UKCA

## What UKCA marking means for your business

Since Brexit, the UK no longer operates as a single uniform product-marking market. Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) uses the UKCA marking as its conformity assessment mark, while Northern Ireland continues to follow EU rules for covered harmonised goods.

The UKCA marking replaced the CE marking for the GB market, but with important caveats: CE marking continues to be recognized indefinitely in Great Britain for many product regulations, giving businesses flexibility in their compliance approach. However, understanding when UKCA is required versus when CE is accepted is critical for proper market access.

For manufacturers outside the UK, appointing a UK Responsible Person or Authorised Representative may be necessary depending on the product category and conformity assessment route. The documentation requirements mirror CE marking in many ways, but there are specific GB-designated standards and Approved Bodies that differ from their EU equivalents.

GB vs NI

## Great Britain vs Northern Ireland: The market split

### Great Britain (UKCA/CE)

Products can use UKCA marking or, for many regulations, continue using CE marking indefinitely. GB-designated standards provide presumption of conformity. Approved Bodies (formerly UK Notified Bodies) conduct third-party assessment where required.

### Northern Ireland (CE/UKNI)

Products follow EU rules for covered harmonised goods. CE marking is required. Where mandatory third-party assessment is done by a UK body, UKNI must be used alongside CE. EU harmonised standards apply.

Requirements

## Core UKCA compliance requirements

01

### Product scope and regulations

Identify which UK regulations apply to your product. Common frameworks include the Radio Equipment Regulations, EMC Regulations, Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, Machinery Regulations, and Toys (Safety) Regulations.

02

### Designated standards

Select applicable GB-designated standards from the UK government's official list. These standards provide presumption of conformity when followed correctly. They may differ from EU harmonised standards.

03

### Conformity assessment

Determine whether self-assessment is permitted or if Approved Body involvement is required. Higher-risk products such as certain medical devices, pressure equipment, and ATEX equipment typically require third-party assessment.

04

### Technical documentation

Compile a technical file including product description, risk assessment, test reports, design drawings, BOM, user instructions, and supplier declarations. This must be maintained for 10 years after the last unit is placed on the market.

05

### Declaration and marking

Draft and sign a UK Declaration of Conformity. Affix the UKCA marking to the product, packaging, or accompanying documentation according to the relevant regulations. Ensure the marking is visible, legible, and indelible.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between UKCA and CE marking?

UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) is the conformity marking used for products placed on the Great Britain market. CE marking is for the EU market. CE marking continues to be recognized indefinitely in Great Britain for many product regulations, but UKCA marking is the long-term GB conformity mark.

### Do I need UKCA marking for Northern Ireland?

No. In Northern Ireland, products that fall within covered harmonised goods frameworks continue to follow EU rules, including CE marking. Where mandatory third-party conformity assessment is carried out by a UK body, the UKNI marking must be used alongside CE.

### How long does UKCA marking take?

Plan 8–14 weeks from design freeze to compliance. Testing typically takes 2–4 weeks at an accredited lab. Documentation preparation—including technical files, risk assessments, and declarations—usually takes 4–8 weeks depending on product complexity.

### What products need UKCA marking?

UKCA marking applies to most products previously covered by CE marking in the GB market: radio equipment, electrical equipment, machinery, toys, PPE, pressure equipment, and more. Some products have specific GB regulations with UKCA requirements.

### Can I self-certify for UKCA marking?

Many products can be self-certified using internal production control when designated standards are applied. Notified Body (now Approved Body) involvement is only required for higher-risk products where the regulations mandate third-party assessment.
