# BEE Star Label: Mandatory Energy Ratings for Electronics in India

India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency runs a star rating scheme for energy-consuming products — and the mandatory list is growing. For certain categories including air conditioners, refrigerators, LED lamps, fans, and televisions, displaying a BEE star label is a legal requirement before sale. The label must reflect current BEE-certified test data and the registration must be kept current as schedule revisions update the efficiency thresholds.

## Transcript

### No star label, no sale — for mandatory categories

India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency mandates star labels for products like air conditioners, refrigerators, LED lamps, fans, and TVs. Without a valid BEE star rating from certified test data, you can't sell in India. Thresholds get revised often, so last year's rating may not qualify.

### How the BEE scheme works

Under India's Energy Conservation Act 2001, BEE runs the Standards and Labelling scheme. Test at a NABL-accredited, BEE-empanelled lab, then register your model on the BEE portal. Re-registration is required roughly every two to three years, as schedules update.

### Planning BEE alongside your India launch

Check the BEE mandatory list for your product category. If it applies, book a BEE-empanelled lab early — allow four to eight weeks — and reserve label space in your packaging. Check the current schedule before testing, since a one-star rating may not sell well.
