# EN 62368-1 Explained: The Safety Standard That Replaced EN 60950 and EN 60065

EN 62368-1 replaced both EN 60950-1 (IT equipment) and EN 60065 (audio-video equipment) across the EU and most global markets. If your lab is still issuing test reports against the old standards, those reports are no longer acceptable for CE marking. The new standard takes a hazard-based approach that changes how you think about safety engineering — not just what tests you run.

## Transcript

### The old standards are withdrawn — here's what replaced them

EN 60950-1 covered IT equipment. EN 60065 covered audio-visual gear. Both are now withdrawn. EN 62368-1 replaces them and has been mandatory for CE marking since December 2020. A test report citing either old standard can't support a current Declaration of Conformity.

### Hazard-based safety engineering

EN 62368-1 shifts from prescriptive rules to hazard-based engineering: identify energy sources and classify potential injury. Class 1 can't cause injury; Class 2 can cause pain; Class 3 can cause serious injury or death. Scope spans IT and audio-video gear.

### Check your test reports now

Pull your current test reports. If they cite EN 60950-1 or EN 60065, they're built on withdrawn standards and your CE DoC needs updating. Ask your test lab for a gap assessment — often nothing needs retesting, but the documentation must still be updated.
