# India Legal Metrology: MRP, Net Quantity, and Packaging Rules

India's Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules mandate specific declarations on every pre-packaged product sold in India — including imported electronics. The label must show the MRP inclusive of all taxes, net quantity, importer name and address, country of origin, and more, in prescribed font sizes. Non-compliant packaging can result in customs rejection and legal penalties. Most foreign brands get this wrong on their first shipment.

### Customs rejects shipments over missing label fields

India's legal metrology rules require specific label information most foreign brands don't print — miss the MRP, the importer's Indian address, or the country of origin, and customs can hold or reject your shipment. Most brands discover this the hard way, on their first shipment.

### What must appear on the label

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 require the importer's name and Indian address, country of origin, net quantity, and MRP inclusive of all taxes, stated as 'MRP Rs.' Minimum font size is four millimetres above fifty square centimetres.

### Avoiding customs rejection

Design your India label sticker before your first shipment, not after customs flags it. It must be affixed before or at clearance — your customs agent can apply it at the bonded warehouse. Confirm all mandatory fields and font sizes are correct.
